Diri Receives Trophies From Sports Association

Governor Douye Diri was on Thursday, August 31,2023 presented with various trophies won by Bayelsa State athletes in different sporting competitions this year.

The presentation was done shortly after the weekly prosperity walk exercise at the main bowl of the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.

Governor Diri assured that his administration would continue to give priority to the development of sports in the state, stating that the athletes have written their names in gold because of their outstanding outings.

He noted that Bayelsa in the last three years has made significant progress in sports, explaining that State is blessed with abundant  talents, stressing that the prosperity administration would continue encourage athletes reach the zenith of their careers.

The state helmsman stressed the need for athletes to take advantage of the State’s areas of strength during competitions, especially, swimming, canoeing, wrestling following the exploits in different tournaments.

Governor Diri equally announced Tonye Solomon De ball Juggler as an ambassador to the State and also Senior Special Assistant to the governor following his recent recognition by the Guinness World Record to set the record for the most steps (150) climbed on a ladder while balancing a football on the head.

Also, Director of Bayelsa State Sports Council Sir Braveman Wodi in an interview, asserted that the State athletes would continue to make Bayelsa proud whenever they represent the State, describing the achievements recorded under governor Diri’s watch as laudable.

Sir Wodi explained that the governor has sponsored not less than thirty three associations to national competition in the year, and expressed optimism that the state’s contingent would be fit ahead of the National Youth Games in Asaba Delta State, slated for 7th to 17th of September.

Among the sports that won laurels for Bayelsa are Judo, Karate, Kickboxing, Kokowa, Langa, Mixed Martial Arts, Scrabble, Table Tennis, Taekwondo,Vovinam Vietvodao, Athletics, Aquatic, Swimming, Abula, Ayo.

Others are Badminton, Baseball/Softball, Chess, Boxing, Draught, Cycling, Basketball, Beach Volleyball and Canoeing.
